"Does Utopia Rule Our Lives?" by KINGPIN
It has just hit me how much Utopia controls us. We are addicted to a game, and it makes us do things that we would have thought stupid before starting it. People have been driven to waking up at insane hours during the night simply to check on a computerised simulation of a world. We are mindless zombies that pretend that we are the rulers of an imaginary world.

Ask yourself this, when you succeed in a thief operation, or take 100 acres of land, knowing that you're safe and no-one can touch you, building defense equal to an american battle fleet, does it give you a rush? Does the andrenaline pump through your body knowing that your democratic skill and strategy has led you succesfully to a greater goal?

Are we people sad, letting a simple game control our whole lives? People posting messages like "HELP!! I CANT LOG IN" after trying once to try and access the game - having been denied the desire to play, we panic. But what if Utopia should end? Will sites like Utopia Temple cease to exist? Or will we simply change to another game... like Dominion Temple, or Ambar Temple? And why do we treat Mehul as a god? Yes, he created the first game like this, and yes it is good and yes we all love it. But when people post things in the Bugs & Suggestions forum like "I GOT TO POST UNDER MEHUL!!" and "THANKS MEHUL, YOUR THE GREATEST!" and "Mehul, you ROCK!", it is merely sucking up. He may see your post, but he will discard it without a second glance or thought. Is this the life we want to lead?

I don't think we shall truly know until it happens, which i doubt - too many people are hooked, and unless Mehul wants to increase suicide rates accross the world, he wouldn't do it.

Take a minute to think about it...

Erm, its a game, a fun and interesting one, but a game no less. If you get up in the middle of the night to check your utopia you have problems, maybe you should consider getting a dog?

Mehul is not a god, he eats and sh!ts like the rest of us. He is very clever, granted, but honestly :)

Utopia does seem to govern our lives doesn&#039t it.It kinda does make ya feel good if u cripple a enemy province or u take 200 acres from someone but noone in the real world cares, thats the bad thing about it.I think utopia will see atleast round 30-40 and as long as it remains free people will play it and even if it isn&#039t free i still think people will play because those who have played since 1st or 2nd round are hooked just because they want to see how its gonna evolve age to age. This my thoughts on utopia

Hmm... I dont wake up in the night just to play utopia, and I dont get an adrenaline rush when I grab alot, (although the 488 acres grab with my 130k dwarf made me feel nice)
but I feel sad when I log in and see I have dropped 20-40k nw and 200-300 acres.
This dont happen all to often, but to be kicked in the @$$ really makes me angry, when you think of all the weeks and months I have spent with my province, and a weeks work could be gone within a few hours...

i only spend about a 4 hour minimum per day in utopia.
i login when i wake up, before i go to school, three times when i&#039m at school, and about one or two times per hour when i&#039m at home until deep in the night.

and i even do wake up at crazy hours from time to time when i&#039ve found a juicy target and i can&#039t wait till morning to make the grab :)

Yes of corse Utopia does,
but these times you might go a little deeper, creating a philosofical question;
Out of everything we do,
what is then NOT a waste of time?
is there at all anything that isn&#039t??
I say no there isn&#039t,
everything you do, is a waste of time,
you could spend this time better,
of course, even knowing the outcome, the things you do and the choices you make, can never be the right ones.

maybe you are right, last age i was very very active in my kingdom and was trying to be king, i just need some more votes, when i was in my bed i could not sleep sometimes after 3 hours thinking about utopia. How could i be sure I would be king and not someone else? How could i improve my defence the best? How big would i be the next age? How big was the change to be attacked? Did i get the 5 acres bonus? no? well log in....

So yes it was ruling my life, and sometimes after that i was grabbed for 300 acres i was DEPRESSED, how was it possible...

Yes it controls our lives, but it gives us some "power". We have the power over lots of peasants. It is like the game of Warhammer. when they are sending the enmes away with one swosh, you are happy. Same here, when you just attacked any enimy and you won, you are happy and content. you belleive you are the greatest, but when you are getting concured you get frustrated and hit the keyboard.

think about how silly thieves are : we spend hours and hours a day to make thieves by the thousand swim over to other islands, grab piles of coins, and swim all the way back to our very own island, then start cursing that the thief ratio should be increased :))

maybe Mehul created this game as a purely philosophical and highly effective means of making ppl think about the value of life ?

cheers people, i do enjoy coming across you as enemies and friends !

I have a question for you all. If Utopia is so much fun, then why isn't the real world more like it? Seriously, we've had all these ideas put in our heads that peace is so presious. But I ask you, Isn't all this peace boring? How do you find honor, how do you find nobility if you sit on a couch and watch tv day in and day out. Pehaps Utopia is the answer to our simple nature. We like conflict, we like to conquer, we like to honor and protect our loved ones, it is our nature, and Utopia supplies the means to partisipate in this great adventure without risking your life in the real world....

Just a thought, hehe

It is not game that holds us it's the interation with ppl all around the world, my most interesting age and "adicting age" was the one where we had a full internal war in my kingdom, it was realy fun/satisfying to fight for something you realy beleve in, like the evil alliance will not take my Kingdom over, not while I/my province is still alive. We lost, I had to go to the alps to snowboard and it sure beat the crap out of utopia, but that's not free.

Yes, I am adicted but I'd rather do Utopia than any other drug, it at least doesn't hurt your health that bad, a little screen-tan has never hurt anybodey have it?

Enjoy the game.

i totally agree that some of us are totally addicted to utopia but i myself don't quiet addicted to it...
i can go 2-3 days without opening mah account but still manage to be a 500k over nw province.....yea..it will ruin our live if we are too addicted.....but someone should think that it's only a GAME.....don't take it too serously...although some might say that it's too political to be a game....come on ..just enjoy the game and don
't get too addicted...

yeah - utopia is an addictive game, but there's a lot more to this than meets the eye...

Through the game, so many people have met + talked about things other than the game - we find commen interests and socialise in our own little communities.

Alliances are an extension of these communities, and I dare say that you'd find that the majority of alliance talking you see *isn't* about utopia, but about life in general and people getting to know each other...

I even dare admit that I've met up with a whole load of people who were first introduced through this game... and have had some pretty great holidays too!

Utopia is a great social phenomenon, and is appreciated by many for what it is...

of course there are others that don't really see that side of things, and take the game very seriously, to the point of obsession... these people are quite scary

Well, if all your housmate, some of your classmate and your little brother/sister or even your gf play utopia, Utopia will not just a game anymore. It will be a part of game. Example, when go to class, and some of your frieds say "Sup man, how's your provinces" and you smile and said "Great, last night I just got 120 acres with 2000 ogre only. The province just suicide". No one will understand your conversation unless he played utopia...but the player...they enjoy it very-very much. Mehul is not the god, but he's a human who are so creative creating an online game which make you sooooo adict at. You can say anything to Mehul but once he delete your 10 ages account, you will cry and jump out from the window.

People need fantasy in order to live happy lives. If we all lived in this world, mind and body, it would get pretty friggin boring. I see Utopia as a strange way to get lost in fantasy and let the troubled world go for a few minutes. You learn people skills, strategy, and who knows what else. I do think that if you sit in front of your computer staring at the page all day, then it could be a bit of a problem. But there's nothing at all wrong with a little bit of fantasy in our lives.

then for 10 minutes I can chill, and forget

say it's not in my mind at all during the

i have played a whole age of utopia and to be honest it was fun.
but for a year now i haven't been able to go on it.
now i am back, and i am having fun again. In all this year i have not given utopia one single thought. maybe just some thoughts the first day i left it.
so i would be confident when i say that utopia is juat one of these games!!!!!

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever read. It's called imagination bro, and it's a pretty damn sweet things. It's not like we're everquesters, who kill ourselves if we die in the game, I'm sure you all heard that story. But you say things that just contradict yourself; you say that we treat the game too seriously, but then you say "I don't think we shall truly know until it happens" it sounds like you're talking about a cataclysmic, earth-shaking crisis. That's some smooth thinking right there. There's this thing call proofreading: look into it.

Kinda funny. With some of you i agree that utopia can become addictive, especially around crucial points in the gameplay (such as a kingdom almost a mil bigger decides they just don't like you:P), but as far as how serious i take the game? i take it serious enough to login probably 3 times a day totalling i guess 2 hours, unless on the weekends.

but i would much rather play this game than watch some of the stupid shows that come on TV. At least this game developes a person. TV doesn't help you build character or personality. Utopia helps you to understand teamwork and indiviualism, as well as how unfair this so-called "utopian life" can be. I agree with that one guy way back there ^, one element that makes this game so appealing is that things happen and you have absoluately no control over them. There's no way to simply alter a game line here or transfer a game editor and become a "god". Things happen when your computer goes down, or utopia goes offline. Before you login it's a mystery as to whether you're 700 acres smaller or 700k richer.

This game does not rule my life. and i agree with the philosophical question asked last year. there is nothing we do on earth, with the exception of witnessing and glorifing God(sorry had to put that'n in there), that makes one difference. When you are conceived you are guaranteed one thing. Death.

sorry to be all down and crap but, just my views. as i'm entitled. Utopian as stated a couple threads up, is meant for entertainment. Heck if i remember right Mehul made this game as an experiment to see if free online gaming could support itself. To those of you who feel that utopia is a life, then i hope you are successful and one day find a better form of happiness. And those who feel they should down the "addicts" of the game. Not everyone has the same views as you do. lighten up. You life is yours and their's is their's.

You fight a war with your mind, something which we'll probably be doing in the future anywayz. For now utopia trains us to think before reacting and is a great way to blow of some steam.
I think that if utopia would end people would simply move on, we all know that nothing lasts forever.

And everybody likes it, and is trying to get better each age.
And oke, there are a few people who get up in the night to check their account. But alot don't do that!
So it is oke to play!
And I don't say mehul is a god, but he is cool, coz he made the game!!!

If mehul, in a drunken rage, destroyed all of the servers and completely annihilated Utopia, I would have to thank him. I love the game and no matter what I always come back to it. I've quit for 1 or two ages... ok, ok, months... alright, weeks... Something about the game just grabs you and keeps you there. Other games such as Ambar, Dominion, and Kings of Chaos lack either the simplicity or the atmosphere.

Getting to know someone you've never seen before and sharing a kingdom with them, watching it grow and prosper, is great. While i do have a normal life, I am 17 you know, I like to drink and party just as much as any jock out there, i find myself crawling in the door at 3AM and logging into utopia. My school work suffers, and i've lost a girlfriend or two complaining I'm to geeky, but hey It'll all fall together someday.

Please everybody reread this posts, I laughed my head off. :D

Yes I'm addicted to this game, and I do feel great if I'm doing good, but I really don't get depressed or anything when I suck. (Although.. I'm thinking of suiciding sometimes :D) Things like sports and school and friends are more important to me.

I am proud to say that I am hooked on Utopia.
A few times I have violated the 48 hr rule and as soon as I could; done a mad dash to get to Utopia to make sure I haven't died.
Though, as everybody knows; Utopia is just a game, and if you die you can come back to life through making a new account.
While for some people this new account might be significantly crappier than your last one, you can continue playing.
I am glad that Mehul made Utopia so realistic, as if you make a bad decision, the reprecussions are lasting and terrible, a good decision results in greatness.

I have not liked the changes to Utopia since age 7...
I have quit in frustration several times already.
But here I am again, craving the old rush.
*sighs*
I curse Mehul with every breath I take for creating this confounded game!!

I cant disagree with you more!
True, I do like playing utopia, but I am NOT addicted. Its just a game I love to play.
Now waking in the middle of the night to play, or breaking up with your girlfriend because of a stupid game is just SAD!!!!
You gotta have PRIORITIES and utopia should'nt come before having a LIFE!!!!

Yes you become kindda addict to the game, it's strategy and team playing, there's a lot of social contact involved in playing Utopia....

if Mehul acually reads this i am a cp programmer and would love to help him make this true for i have many ideas on how to still keep the AAHhhs and OOhhhs from the word game and turn it into a visual game or maybe just update it into word based with visual cg such as when attck a movie with the same races that are being attaked or just most action will have a movie representation with it so keep it divers and have multiple cg's per thing to keep it from being repetitive

utopia is an addictive game because it needs attention.buy anyways it takes our minds out of the real world for a second and when we are there in the utopian world it feels good, because you have power that u dont have in real life.

i guess utopia is a place to lost myself in. just when you feel the world has turned its back against you, you turn to utopia, because you know it is always there for u. i have actually been searching for a game like this for ages...now i am addicted. i learnt a lot, from forums, when interacting with fellow kd mates... it is like a second school.

I have been playing utopia for about 6 ages now, to some this my be alot to others it is nothing at all. I have been loging in to utopia from utopia temple for the whole time and just now desided to create an account here so i can post my opion. To answer the question on if utopia rules our lives well yes it kinda does, when im doing good my whole day seems to go better and i can work harder and life is good, but when im not doing so good vice versa. Also yes i have had trouble sleeping when my armies are gone during war and have woken up at insane hours to check my account!

I think utopia becomes much more than a game the longer you play with the same pll in a kingdom. I've been playing with the same guys/girls for all my 6 ages of playing. I have met people all troughout the world and have made lots of friends over a game!

When some of my biddies first talked to me about this game i said it was the stupidest thing i've ever heard, i also made fun of them for about 2 weeks before tring it myself. This game becomes dangerouslly addictive for a while and seems to last b/c of constant chages throughout the ages. Now im at the point where i ask for soms of hot chicks and have accentdentlly written a check to my province name!

I think it's addictive because it has a couple of desirable aspects.
You can escpae from thw world. You can tell things to utopian frends that u wudnt tell to ur real frends and vice-versa. Your age, skin colour or nationality has no impact either.
I'm 16, and a monarch, "dark" skinned, and i have control over people twice as old as me. How often does that happen in the real world? Young leaders can effectively EARN their way to leadership.

Also, competition keeps the world going round. There is always new competitors. There are many ways to express your skills. Our motivation for doing anything is to succeed against others. Everything you do, you are competing with others. The competition here is just as fierce here, if not, more
